Ecology

  • Suricata found in various habitats " such as savannah , open plains , and rocks that have a lot of stored water .
  • Can be found in the desert , Kalahari , and sandy soil , is found also in the less fertile land called Solonetzic soils
  • Suricata who live in the area between the rocks live in the crevices of rocks . They occupy the rocks which they can enter easily , but they are also commonly occupy the hole where other small mammals .
  • Suricata suricatta associated dg ground squirrel Xerus inauris and yellow mink living solitary , Cynictis penicillata
  • Suricata occupy burrows Xerus without attack and cut no competition for food or a place
  • One group consists of 2 to 30 people

Nutrition

      They are mainly insectivorous, but have a varied diet which frequently consists of prey such as:
  •          beetles and their larvae
  •     millipedes, caterpillars and            grubs
  •          grasshoppers and crickets
  •          ants
  •          geckos and small lizards
  •          skinks and burrowing skinks
  •          spiders, scorpions and solifuges
  •          other insects where available
  •          They also eat small snakes, burrowing frogs and mice where they can catch them.

Population biology

        In the breeding season, young males frequently break away from their group and create ‘roving parties’ where they will enter other territories for chances of mating with females in other groups. These coalitions can last from a few hours to a few days and can sometimes lead to the formation of new meerkat mobs if females from other groups join them.
